Betta Beam LVL 13 is an engineered laminated veneer lumber designed to provide greater strength, straightness and stability than comparable natural timber. It is commonly used for headers, beams, rimboards and edge-forming applications, with reduced risk of twisting or bowing.

Where is E13 Betta Beam used?+

Betta Beam E13 is a high-strength structural LVL designed primarily for beams and other load-bearing applications in residential and light commercial construction. Typical uses include lintels, floor beams, bearers, roof beams, rafters and other structural members where strength, stiffness and straightness matter.

Is Betta Beam easier to handle than hardwood?+

In many applications, yes. LVL can provide an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, particularly when compared with some traditional dense hardwood beams. Combined with its straightness and consistent dimensions, this can make Betta Beam easier to measure, cut, position and install on site.

Can Betta Beam be cut, drilled and nailed on site?+

Yes. Betta Beam can be cut and fixed using conventional carpentry tools and approved timber fixings. However, large holes, notches or significant modifications to structural beams should not be made without checking the manufacturer's requirements or the project's engineering details.

Where can I buy E13 Betta Beam LVL?+

How do I know what size Betta Beam I need?+

Beam size depends on the application, span, loads, support conditions and other aspects of the building design. Use the relevant Betta Beam span tables and technical information, or follow the beam size specified by your engineer or building designer.

Is E13 Betta Beam LVL treated?+

Yes. Betta Beam E13 is H2S treated, providing protection against termites and borers. H2S treatment is designed for indoor, above-ground applications protected from the weather, south of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Can Betta Beam be used outside?+

No. Standard Betta Beam E13 is H2S treated and is not intended for external, weather-exposed applications. It is designed for indoor, above-ground use where it is protected from the weather. For external applications, a product with the appropriate treatment and specification should be used.

What sizes and lengths is E13 Betta Beam available in?+

Betta Beam E13 is available in both 45 mm and 63 mm thicknesses, across a wide range of beam depths and lengths to suit different structural applications. Common 45 mm sections include: 90 × 45 | 150 × 45 | 200 × 45 | 240 × 45 | 300 × 45 | 360 × 45 | 400 × 45 mm Selected beam depths are also available in 63 mm thicknesses for applications requiring greater structural capacity. Lengths typically range from 3.6 m right through to 12.0 m, depending on the section.

What is the difference between E10 and E13?+

E10 and E13 are different structural grades of LVL. Fast Frame E10 is designed primarily for general framing applications, while Betta Beam E13 provides greater stiffness and structural capacity for applications such as beams, lintels, bearers and other heavily loaded members. Put simply: E10 for framing. E13 when you need more muscle.

Is Betta Beam stronger than hardwood?+

It depends on the species and grade of hardwood and the particular structural application, so E13 shouldn't simply be described as stronger than every hardwood beam. The advantage of Betta Beam is its engineered and predictable structural performance. Rather than relying on the natural variation found in solid timber, LVL is manufactured to provide consistent structural properties from beam to beam. Always refer to the appropriate span tables or engineering requirements when selecting a structural beam.

What is the difference between E13 and hardwood beams?+

Traditional hardwood beams are solid timber, meaning their strength, straightness and appearance can naturally vary from piece to piece. Betta Beam is LVL — Laminated Veneer Lumber — manufactured from multiple timber veneers bonded together to create a strong, consistent engineered beam. This provides predictable structural properties, consistent dimensions and a beam that is generally much straighter and more uniform than traditional solid hardwood. For the carpenter, that means less wrestling with heavy, twisted hardwood and a more consistent product to work with.

What actually makes Betta Beam better to work with?+

It comes down to strength, straightness and consistency. Betta Beam is engineered to deliver predictable structural performance while remaining straight and dimensionally consistent. That makes measuring, cutting, installing and lining up your structure easier — particularly when working with longer beams.
